Wendell was hired to do a simple job: Shoot a machine gun at a man in the pit. The man in the pit? Wolverine! Since he can't reach Wendell to fight back, Wolverine talks to him and plays on the depressing events of Wendell's life to make him contemplate ending it all. When Wendell breaks and lets the man he's sure will kill him out of the pit, Wolverine does just the opposite, throwing him in the pit and promising him no harm while he goes to claw out a bloody escape through everyone else. In the epilogue, We learn that Wild Child, and presumably Romulus, speaking from the shadows, admire a wall full of Polariods snapped during Logan's time in the pit, suggesting their responsiblity in the torture.
