While attending a family gathering in Annandale-on-Hudson, Rachel and her relatives are ambushed by the Shi’ar Death Commandos—an elite group of alien assassins. The attack is swift and brutal, resulting in the deaths of many Grey family members, including Rachel's grandfather, John Grey.

Rachel emits a telepathic scream, alerting the X-Men at the Xavier Institute. Nightcrawler, along with Shadowcat and Psylocke, teleports to the scene to assist. Despite their efforts, the X-Men are overwhelmed.
