This issue is a pivotal installment in the Decimation storyline, focusing on Rachel Grey (Marvel Girl) and the tragic fate of her family.
While attending a family gathering in Annandale-on-Hudson, Rachel and her relatives are ambushed by the Shi’ar Death Commandos—an elite group of alien assassins. The attack is swift and brutal, resulting in the deaths of many Grey family members, including Rachel's grandfather, John Grey.
Rachel emits a telepathic scream, alerting the X-Men at the Xavier Institute. Nightcrawler, along with Shadowcat and Psylocke, teleports to the scene to assist. Despite their efforts, the X-Men are overwhelmed. In the aftermath, Rachel is branded with the Phoenix symbol by the Commandos' leader, Blackcloak, signifying a deeper connection to her past and foreshadowing future challenges.
