Avengelyne and Peter return to New York. However, the return to see St. Augustine in flames. Fortunately, no one was killed, but Father Malory was stunned by the loss. Everyone thinks that it was just a random act of violence, but Avengelyne knows that it was the work of demons. Unknown to her, the burning of the church was the first step in an elaborate plot to destroy Avengelyne by B'Liale. While exploring the ruins of the church, Avengelyne is saved from a long hard fall by a new parishioner, Kyle Wagner. Avengelyne is instantly captivated with him. However, the demons who burned the church return, threatening to do worse. Kyle stands up to them, although he doesn't reaize that they could kill him in a second. After a few minutes, when the demons and Avengelyne are by themselves, the demons give her a warning. Kyle comes in and saves her for the moment. The police arrive, and the demons leave. Later that night, Father Malory announces that he is leaving the Catholic Church, since they refuse to help him rebuild the church. Many of his parishioners agree to help, although Peter disagrees. Kyle, whom we now find out to be a demon, goes to report in to B'Liale. Later, Avengelyne and Kyle are at dinner. As they leave the restaurant, they are attacked by another demon. She is able to defeat him, with Kyle watching. After wards, she tells him about what she is. What they later do leads to the events in the next two issues.
