Main Story: “The Wedding!”

This issue centers around the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson — a canonical, in-continuity event in Earth-616, not an alternate universe.

The lead-up: Peter is dealing with the pressure of being Spider-Man and the weight of committing to a life with Mary Jane. She’s simultaneously facing doubts about whether she can handle a future with someone constantly living a double life.

The conflict: Classic Spider-Man villains — including Electro, The Thinker, and others — resurface briefly in a subplot, reminding Peter (and the readers) how dangerous his world is. Mary Jane, meanwhile, has an emotional moment alone, reflecting on her independence versus committing to Peter.

The ceremony: Ultimately, Mary Jane chooses Peter, they proceed with the wedding ceremony in a beautiful garden setting, attended by friends and family. Peter is late, of course (typical Spidey fashion), but he makes it just in time.

The kiss: They are officially married in this issue. It’s a landmark in Spider-Man continuity.

Backup Stories (short features in the 52-page annual)

1. “I Now Pronounce You…” — The lead wedding story.

2. “Peter Parker, This Is Your Life!” — A reflective story that revisits Peter’s past, key moments, and supporting cast in a “highlight reel” narrative.

3. “If Spider-Man Should Die…” — A short villain subplot involving Electro and the Thinker.

4. Various pin-ups and character profiles celebrating the event.

Notes
This issue was so significant that Marvel actually created a fictional wedding between two actors playing Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson and had an actual wedding at Shea stadium in Queens York.

“On June 5, 1987, Marvel Comics and the New York Mets staged a one-of-a-kind live wedding at Shea Stadium — Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson tied the knot in front of more than 45,000 fans. Officiated by Stan Lee, with Mary Jane’s wedding dress designed by fashion icon Willi Smith, the event promoted the comic book milestone in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21.

A historic crossover of comics, fashion and pop culture — this issue isn’t just about a story; it represents a real-world spectacle that brought Spider-Man’s wedding into the live arena.”

This wedding is canonical in Earth-616 — not an alternate universe story.

Peter Parker and Mary Jane remained married in continuity for two decades after this issue (1987–2007).

The undoing of the marriage happened much later during the “One More Day” storyline (2007), where Peter and MJ made a deal with Mephisto to erase their marriage from reality to save Aunt May’s life.

After this retcon, they were never married in current continuity, but this Annual remains the original wedding event.

There was also a “What If…?” issue exploring alternate wedding outcomes — but that’s separate from this Annual.
