In Come Back to the Five and Dime, Ambush Bug, Ambush Bug, Irwin Schwab continues his crusade to expose the absurdities of comic-book storytelling itself. When Ambush Bug stumbles into a temporal paradox involving the death of his stuffed sidekick Cheeks, the Toy Wonder, reality splinters into a string of nonsensical flashbacks, retcons, and fourth-wall breakages. Jonni DC, the ever-annoyed Continuity Cop, attempts to rein in the chaos as Ambush Bug “rewrites” his own origin yet again—complete with editorial notes mocking DC’s post-Crisis on Infinite Earths clean-up.
The issue doubles as a parody of both Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen and Crisis-era editorial mandates, with Keith Giffen’s layout work cramming in meta-commentary, Easter eggs, and intentional continuity contradictions.
