In this issue of the series created by Tony Daniel, the ongoing “Gathering of the Children – Part 2” arc moves forward as protagonist Espen (the Tenth) continues to confront the psychic fallout of the events in the prior arc. The cover imagery (mutated form, twin girls, jungle/psionic energy) signals the deepening of his psychic link to Esperanza and the mysterious “children” he has been drawn to. While full page-by-page details are not available, the issue finds Espen battling both external mutants and internal turmoil as his role as the Tenth is tested.

Notes
The numbering and volume designation of The Tenth can be confusing because the character appeared in two different series that were released close together:

1. The Tenth – 4-Issue Mini-Series (1996)

Image Comics originally launched The Tenth as a four-issue limited series.
Although it was not officially labeled “Volume 1,” many collectors and comic databases treat any first appearance mini-series as a “first volume” by default.

2. The Tenth – Ongoing Series (1997–1999)

One year later, Image launched a full ongoing title with new issue #1–14.
This ongoing book is technically the first regular series, but because the mini-series came first, many databases place the ongoing series under:

“Volume 2”
—even though Image Comics never officially called it that.

✔ Why You May See It Listed as Volume 2

Some database systems automatically assign “Volume 1” to the earliest published series, even if it was only a mini-series. When the ongoing title launched afterward, those systems labeled it “Volume 2” to keep the reading order and publication order clear.

✔ Why This Causes Discrepancies

ComicVine and GCD treat the ongoing series as Volume 1

CLZ, some retailers, and some price guides treat the ongoing series as Volume 2

Image Comics never restarted numbering, so both classifications are technically defensible

The confusion comes entirely from how different databases interpret a mini-series vs. an ongoing series

✔ How CANDM Merchandise Handles It

To maintain consistency across my catalog, I list the ongoing 1997–1999 series as:

The Tenth — Volume 2 (Ongoing Series)

This aligns with how many collectors and several database systems categorize the title, while still acknowledging the earlier four-issue mini-series as the first published run.
