The concluding chapter of the “Gathering of the Children” storyline brings Espen (The Tenth) into direct confrontation with the full force of the psionic children he has been drawn to throughout the arc. As his mutation becomes increasingly unstable, Espen fights to maintain control while Esperanza’s psychic link intensifies, revealing deeper truths about his transformation and the source manipulating the children’s powers. The issue blends psionic horror, mutation-driven action, and dark sci-fi elements as the arc reaches its climax.

The numbering and volume designation of The Tenth can be confusing because the character appeared in two different series that were released close together:
1. The Tenth – 4-Issue Mini-Series (1996)
Image Comics originally launched The Tenth as a four-issue limited series.
Although it was not officially labeled “Volume 1,” many collectors and comic databases treat any first appearance mini-series as a “first volume” by default.
2. The Tenth – Ongoing Series (1997–1999)
One year later, Image launched a full ongoing title with new issue #1–14.
This ongoing book is technically the first regular series, but because the mini-series came first, many databases place the ongoing series under:
“Volume 2”
—even though Image Comics never officially called it that.
✔ Why You May See It Listed as Volume 2
Some database systems automatically assign “Volume 1” to the earliest published series, even if it was only a mini-series. When the ongoing title launched afterward, those systems labeled it “Volume 2” to keep the reading order and publication order clear.
✔ Why This Causes Discrepancies
ComicVine and GCD treat the ongoing series as Volume 1
CLZ, some retailers, and some price guides treat the ongoing series as Volume 2
Image Comics never restarted numbering, so both classifications are technically defensible
The confusion comes entirely from how different databases interpret a mini-series vs. an ongoing series
✔ How CANDM Merchandise Handles It
To maintain consistency across my catalog, I list the ongoing 1997–1999 series as:
The Tenth — Volume 2 (Ongoing Series)
This aligns with how many collectors and several database systems categorize the title, while still acknowledging the earlier four-issue mini-series as the first published run.
