The story starts with a traveller with a tale to tell, he'll become the narrator for the journey, it seems. Once there was a good knight, Lord Covenant, but he went to seek salvation in the crusades. In his place Baron Rivalen now rules and he is a harsh and corrupt ruler. It starts with three men digging in the graveyard to retrieve something for the Baron, but they are slaughtered in the midst of their project. Rivalen suspects something is amiss, so he sends his man at arms, DuBlanc, to find out what happened. Meanwhile a stranger meets a young boy in the forest and asks about the ruined and deserted castle in the distance. DuBlanc shows up at the local barkeep, and confronts the townspeople on the three men. Things quickly grow violent and DuBlanc cuts a man down for talking back. However, the killer of the three men shows up. He is the Black Knight. He cuts down DuBlanc's men and maims DuBlanc's face. Then he rides off into the night, at least the killer has now been seen by a living soul.
